Why
In the wake of the WSJ's "What They Know" inquiry it was obvious that, for average smartphone users, there is not much that can be done to prevent the leakage of sensitive information.
Apps repeatedly violate expectations of privacy and the underlying mobile operating systems provide little transparency or controls to limit this exposure.
Technically savvy users can jailbreak their phones or create special network environments to gain visibility into their smartphone traffic. However, for normal people the phone, is a black box they can't peer into.
What
MobileScope provides transparency and protection 'in the cloud'. Our architecture allows mobile devices users:
- SEE what information their apps transmit
- BLOCK sensitive transmissions and unwanted traffic (ads)
- SECURE their communication (via HTTPs everywhere/SSL CERT pinning)
- SIGNAL that they don't wish to be tracked (Do-Not-Track)

MobileScope is developed by leading experts in mobile privacy and security. Our team consists of:
- David Campbell principal at Electric Alchemy (a boutique mobile security company),
- Aldo Cortesi author of one of the best privacy research tools on the planet: mitmproxy (which he used to highlight the inherent weaknesses in UDIDs), and
- Ashkan Soltani former FTC technologist and primary technical advisor the the WSJ's "What They Know" look into consumer privacy online.
